THE PERSPECTIVE OF A FRIENDSHIP.

Shinsuke Kawahara and Pierre Hardy are longtime friends. Shinsuke is Japanese, Pierre is French and yet they speak the same language. A language rich in their cultural, artistic and personal differences.

One has made the rabbit his symbol and incorporates it into most of his work. The other chose the cube as an iconic pattern and interprets it over the seasons. Both are multidisciplinary: artist, chef, scenographer for Shinsuke; designer and creator for Pierre.

When he evokes Pierre's work, Shinsuke speaks of purity and of this imperceptible space which animates his creations and evokes calligraphy: « In Pierre's creations, the invisible is fundamental, it offers an overall vision, like in an ultra-modern room. When I draw a painting, the line is important but the void even more. We are both designers and I can feel that ».

When discussing Shinsuke's work, Pierre recounts his unique personality « I like Shinsuke's work because it is the opposite of mine: narrative, figurative, dreamlike, very artisanal and spontaneous. And then, I am passionate about Japan. The idea of these two universes that meet and should not have crossed with each other is appealing to me. In these confined times, we have found a way to travel towards each other ».

ABOUT SHINSUKE KAWAHARA.

The first time Shinsuke Kawahara visited France was in the early 1980s. When the plane touched down at Roissy, he saw a multitude of rabbits.

Like the 12th-century Chôjû-Giga in Japan, he imagined they were caricatures of human beings, far more complex than they initially suggested.

So the rabbit became a signature. From design to scenography, from his drawings to his collaborations, from his restaurant to his guesthouse in Kyoto prefecture, the rabbit accompanies him everywhere.
